Art, Perceptions, Overlapping Worlds, and Encounters

My Artist Statement

updated 04/06/25 thoughts about encounters and relating it with my approach and beliefs towards art from before

I’ve been thinking about the word ‘encounters’ a lot and how I would like to engage in art through that — both as a practitioner and an audience. This seems to ground much of how I create art, to craft encounters for the audience, to think about how the viewer would encounter the artwork, and what this encounter would mean for them and leave for them to take back. This applies both in terms of an individual artwork, as well as a whole exhibition. Having realised my curatorial concept about time, and to be curating video art on a regular basis, the idea behind the so-called ‘audience experience’, the encounter of an artwork, has been something that I constantly think about. As I was working on something else, something struck me to look deeper into what it means, how should I process it, how will it influence my approach to artmaking and curating, and if it is something that can be reconciled with how I have been approaching art.

My way of looking at art was very much based on perception and realities, the overlapping of realities, and art as an instrument that creates territories. The idea of presenting art as encounters seems to align quite nicely with that of artworks as materialised realities of artists that creates territories for the artists to engage…
