Tl;dr: movies are awesome, scroll down to see my favourites in the past year with a list of all the movies I watched at the bottom, and a list of movies I’m looking forward to at the very bottom.

I’ve always enjoyed watching movies. I’m sure most of us do, right?
Since secondary school days (10 years ago omg), I started watching movies on a pretty regular basis. I’m still collecting ticket stubs each time I catch a movie in the theatre as a keepsake; as a piece of memory for the trip to the movie and the movie itself. I organized my collection into a book few years back, while the ones that accumulated in the past few years were just kept in a drawer for now. Few years back was also when I stopped watching movies as much though.

Halfway through 2017 however, I became more and more interested in watching movies. I managed to catch movies screened during the Singapore Chinese Film Festival, A Design Film Festival, as well as the Singapore International Film Festival. Later on in the year, I began keeping track on the list of movies I’ve caught throughout the year, be it in the theatres or not.

Among the 32 movies I watched this year (14 in the cinema), there are several which stood out from the rest, in one way or another. Such movies can be seen in the various awards each year, being recognized for their efforts, be it in the storyline, the cinematography, the sound, or other aspects.

That was when I thought to myself, instead of simply keeping a list of movies I’ve watched, why not have my very own movie awards where I can evaluate which film does best in each area? Because we are all entitled to our own opinions and the Internet allows us to express them, so like, why not right?

Below will be a list of awards and the winning movies, with a list of runners-up for the ones that proved to be a difficult decision for me. Each movie can only be the winner in one category, but can be runners-up to any number of categories. New movies will be featured more, while I will only include older movies if they really mean that much to me.

Best Superhero Movie

Simply the best even if I don’t consider the fact that this is the last time we will see Hugh Jackman as my favourite superhero.

Most WTF Movie

Starring Suki Waterhouse, Jason Momoa, Keanu Reeves, and Jim Carrey may intrigue you a little, but any show categorized as a romantic drama horror-thriller film on Wikipedia certainly deserves a watch. Or two. In case you can’t wrap your head around it the first time. Or you just want to go WTF for a second time.

Runners-up: The Killing of a Sacred Deer, 報告老師!怪怪怪怪物!

Coolest Movie

There’s definitely cooler scenes to show for a film that’s named the Coolest Movie of 2017, but at the same time this scene shows just exactly how cool this movie is.

Best Soundtrack

Lol I just really like the choices of the songs, and how they come together with the show. The movie is just pretty awesome too if you overlook the flaws.

Runners-up: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, 52Hz 我爱你, Baby Driver

Best Visuals

Well Christopher Nolan has to be here somewhere, right?

Runners-up: 摆渡人, The Bad Batch, 大佛普拉斯

Most Emotional Movie

An article perhaps puts it best: 有时候病的是社会,而不是你。

Most Interesting Premise

An unemployed young write struggling with alcoholism played by Anne Hathaway is causing a giant monster to wreck havoc halfway across the world? Also a film that really explores more themes than it seems. Yet another director to watch out for.

Runners-up: The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Bad Batch

Best Biographical Film

Because I feel that JIM CARREY and Andy Kaufman both deserve a mention.

Runner-up: Snowden

The Movie I’ll Watch Again

If I have to pick one out of everything I’ve watched.

A movie that is funny, sad, and everything in between about life; and that’s in black and white.
