Typography: Legibility & Readability

This post was originally posted in the class blog for a module I took in the past semester: http://blog.nus.edu.sg/3217w6/ as part of the module requirements. (edit:link has since been updated with posts from later semesters) It gives a very basic and brief introduction of what typography is about.

Although not really covered in the lecture, I believe that what comes to most of our minds at the first thought of typography is the creative use of typography in graphic design.

Try reading the words.
A mix of words and image to bring out the impact of the quote.

Or even kinetic typography.

While these are certainly interesting examples of typography, are they considered to be “good” typography, especially with regards to what we are learning in this course?
